Summer has knocked and the biggest challenge is to keep the house cool during this time.  Constantly increasing temperature and rapid changes in climate are proving fatal to the environment.  However, with the modern equipment we use to keep our homes cool in summer, the average temperature of the earth also increases.  This is a bitter truth that cannot be ignored.  It is hard to imagine keeping the house cool without an air conditioner i.e. AC, but our ancestors used to take very easy ways to keep the house cool.  They did not even have to pay the long bill of electricity that comes on running AC.

They used to enjoy the cold house in a cool summer season at a low cost. These days, due to the lockdown, there is a need to spend time at home, so it is necessary to keep some eco- to keep the house cool.  Friendly methods should be adopted.  Air conditioners are not the only way to avoid heat and keep the house cool.  There are many ways to keep the house cool from inside even in summer.  Suman Bajpai is telling about similar measures

 Home whiteness

The temperature inside the house increases through the walls and roof of the house.  If the wall and roof are cold, the house can be kept cool easily.  If you haven't done so yet, try other solutions this time in lockdown.  If whitewash is done on the roofs of the rooms before summer next year, it reduces the temperature inside the house by 5 to 10 degrees.  The exterior wall of the house can be heat-reflective painted to make it less hot.  Falls sealing on the roofs of the room is also a good option.  This creates an additional layer under the roof and the room is not heated due to the heating of the roof due to sunlight.  Instead of using oil based paint on walls in the house, it would be better to get water based paint.  They are effective in preventing heat.  There are many houses, which have an open roof above the room.  Due to direct sunlight on the terrace, the rooms are heated all day from inside.  This can be avoided by placing reflective tiles on the roof floor.  The tiles are not affected by sunlight, due to which the rooms under it will remain cold and you will not have to face unnecessary heat and heat.

 Distance from electronic devices

Use of electronic equipment also increases the temperature of the house.  Keep them closed if you are not working on a computer or laptop.  Do not leave TV unnecessarily.  The room in which the light bulbs light up or the TV goes on all day, has more heat than other rooms.  If possible, use LED or CFL bulbs and tube lights in every room of the house.  These will emit less heat, which will help keep the house cool.  Invest in smart power strips that automatically shut off devices when not in use. You open the fridge repeatedly to drink cold water or remove food items, which puts more weight on the fridge.  The refrigerator motor has to produce extra heat to keep the temperature constant.  The rising temperature of the refrigerator increases the heat at the place where the refrigerator is kept.  If possible, fill cold water in a flask so that it does not have to open the refrigerator again and again.  Use washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, etc. when there is no strong sunlight so that the heat generated by them does not heat your home further.

 Effect of indoor plants

Greenery is an excellent way to control temperature.  You plant trees outside the house, balcony or garden, but indoor plants can be planted in rooms to keep the house cool naturally.  There are many indoor plants available in the market that help in cooling the house.  According to research, if there are lots of trees around the house, then the temperature inside the house decreases by 10 to 15 degrees below normal.  Placing plants around the entrance and verandah of the house can reduce the heat effect to a great extent.  The entire house remains cold due to the oxygen released by them.  Plants act as natural air conditioners.  Keep tall plants near windows so that they can prevent direct sunlight from entering the room.

 Cross ventilation is important-

Cross-ventilation is a great way to keep the house cool naturally, so that hot air can come out of the house and cool air can come in.  But, for this, open the windows in the morning and evening.  If you keep the windows of the house open in the afternoon, it will make the house warmer. You can install ventilation fans in the house which throw hot air out of the room.  Cross-ventilation requires opening the windows in opposite directions of the house.

 Add air curtains

Keeping the windows of the house open brings natural fresh air throughout the house.  Do not put thick curtains on the windows, thus air will not come in.  Use light fabric curtains during summer so that air can enter easily.  For this, light colored and cotton curtains are better.  Apply pastel or light colored curtains.  Bed sheets should also be of cotton and small print.

 Poppy seeds will help

If the curtains of poppy seeds are soaked in water and hung, they also cause cold in the house.  These curtains do not allow the heat from the air to enter, and when the water evaporates, cool air is obtained.  Similarly, blinds can be placed in windows and verandahs.  By applying blinds, the sun will not come directly inside the house and the house will be cold.

Try these tips to keep the house cool -
 - Clay Fridge

Earthen pots, jug, etc. can be used instead of fridge to cool the water.  'Jeeer Potts' or clay fridges called 'Mitticools' keep not only water, but also food items cold.

 -Remove heavy Things

Pack and store heavy items used in winter as well as other items such as carpet, quilts, blankets and carpets.  Pack up things like heaters, etc. which are unnecessarily in place in the house.  Keeping the house organized will also result in good flow of air in the house.

 Use exhaust fan-

Run the exhaust fan of your bathroom while cooking and after cooking and after bathing.  This will let the hot and humid air there and cool the house.

 -Standed fan use-

Keeping a bowl of ice in front of the fan with a stand will keep your house cool without running the air conditioner.  This will also reduce power consumption.  If you place a table fan or stand fan in front of an open window at night, the cold air outside can enter the room.

 -Do not lay the time-

Carpets play an important role in enhancing the beauty of the room, but laying the carpet in the summer keeps the house warm.  The empty floor remains cool, so pack the carpet in the summer season.

 -Sprinkle-

You can keep the room cool by spraying water on the roof in the morning and evening.  If there are multi-storeyed flats, you can add water to the balcony.
